There's Already a Camper Prototype for the Cybertruck (2024)

In November 2019, Tesla announced its Cybertruck, a battery-electric full-size pickup truck. It’s designed to meet Tesla’s goal of building sustainable energy substitutes. After just two days of the initial debut, Tesla had received 146,000 pre-orders.

Even though it has been years since this announcement, Space Campers has been dedicated to developing a camper prototype for the Cybertruck whenever it’s finally released to customers.

Let’s look at the Wedge, Space Campers’ prototype, and then you can decide how popular it will be among Cybertruck owners. Let’s dive in!

Who Owns Space Campers?

The Tesla Cybertruck is on the way, and Lee Wilkerson is wasting no time. As founder and head engineer of Space Campers, Wilkerson and his team are developing two prototypes for the Cybertruck. As soon as the truck becomes available, they can conduct further testing and perfect their models.

Wilkerson is a mechanical engineer and launched Space Campers in 2020. Before this venture, Wilkerson helped start Whalebird Kombucha, a brewery in San Luis Obispo, California. He also has previous experience in the startup world and custom tool-building experience for the medical, industrial, aerospace, and agricultural industries.

What Truck Are the Space Campers Built For?

The Tesla Cybertruck became available to customers at the end of 2023. This sleek, futuristic automobile has finally hit production. Although the demand has been high, the process has been slow.

Elon Musk has been honest about the difficulties of production due to the innovative nature of the Cybertruck. There’s nothing to copy, and predicting outcomes is almost impossible when venturing into unchartered territory. But production is underway, and customers have started receiving them.

The Cybertruck features Mega Charger V4 technology that can charge to capacity in less than 30 minutes. The exoskeleton is made of ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless-steel structural skin and Tesla armor glass to eliminate dents and damage. Another unique feature is the adaptive air suspension, which can raise and lower suspension four inches in either direction.

But the Tesla Cybertruck isn’t just about new technology and innovative design. The truck has up to 2,500 pounds of payload capacity and over 11,000 pounds of towing capacity.

It can also accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than three seconds and travel up to 470+ miles without needing a charge if you get the range extender.

About the Space Campers Lineup

Without the Tesla Cybertruck in hand, Space Campers can’t perfect their prototypes just yet. However, the Wedge debuted at the Tesla Takeover in San Luis Obispo, California this summer. San Luis Obispo is the home of Space Campers.

The Wedge

The Wedge doesn’t require any modifications to the Cybertruck. Space Campers’ struts use the truck’s onboard air compressor for automated opening like a rooftop tent. You can be set up in merely a few minutes. Plus, owners can still have full access to the truck bed. It’s simple and functional yet robust and durable.

The Murphy-style bed sleeps up to two, and when not in use, it tucks away to provide eight feet of interior headroom. Extensions create spaces for benches and tables. These also act as countertops where owners can use a portable stovetop and set up a meal prep area.

In Loft Mode, the Wedge enables owners to suspend the Murphy bed outside the vehicle, thus allowing for stargazing or lounging. In Incognito Mode, owners can close the camper while still sleeping in the Wedge for complete discreteness. In Theater Mode, the movie projector accessory kit provides the perfect space for a thriller or romantic comedy.

The Wedge is built with certain specifications, but owners can create a unique interior space. The base weight is 470 pounds, there are four 110-volt outlets and USB ports, and each unit comes with a 4-inch memory foam mattress. On the roof, the versatile modular racking system allows adventurers to bring their bikes, kayaks, SUP boards, and anything else to make their weekend unforgettable.

Space Campers also offers additional upgrades like a camp kitchen, pressurized hot water, a shower, a bathroom, insulation, and solar options.

The Cap

Space Campers isn’t just debuting the Wedge for the Cybertruck, however. The company has also announced its second prototype: the Cap. This unique composite truck topper fits seamlessly onto the Tesla Cybertruck. While this prototype isn’t nearly as far along as the Wedge, Space Campers is hopeful that the growing population of adventurers who prefer a closed, hard-sided truck camper will fall in love with the Cap.

To date, the fixed-roof Cap will come with features like L-track roof runners, wall storage, accessory mounts, foam insulation, 120-volt outlets, and USB ports. Production is set for 2024.

How Much Is A Space Camper?

The presale price for the Wedge is $24,000. However, with the upgrades and features available to add on, we know that price will soar as owners choose various options. The pricing for the Cap is yet to be announced. Space Campers also provides a 5-year warranty that covers all components and parts.

Can I Use the Cybertruck Truck Bed With A Space Camper?

As we mentioned, the Wedge won’t take up the space in the truck bed. To set it up, use the air actuators to raise the camper.

Then, roll down the front tent wall and strap it to the truck tailgate. You’ll still have full access to the truck bed via the tailgate.

A button will lower or raise the tailgate through tunnels built into the Space Camper.

What Accessories Does Space Campers Offer Owners?

Although the Wedge pricing starts at $24,000, Space Campers offers multiple add-ons to make your camper suit your needs. For example, you can add a camp kitchen for $3,800, which includes a stainless steel sink, dual induction cooktops, a stainless steel 5-gallon water tank, a 5-gallon grey water tank, dual bamboo cutting boards, basic kitchenware, pots, pans, and other accessories.

If you want the convenience of your own bathroom, you can add specific features like a shower enclosure for $1,245, a 220-volt water heater kit for $350, and a shower head and cable for $185. Portable toilets are also available and range from $250-1,150, depending on the selection.

Space Campers has a back rack for $3,380 to allow for cooking outdoors. Dual shelves fold down, and bamboo countertops slide out to provide the perfect outdoor cooking space.

The offload rack has two steel lifting arms that position directly under the Wedge’s bed panel. This accessory helps quickly offload the camper from the Cybertruck. It’s $875.

Owners can also add solar panels, roof racks, cross bars, an auxiliary light bar, a portable refrigerator/freezer, an insulated water tent, a portable air conditioner/heater, and more.

How Do I Order A Space Camper?

You can reserve your Space Camper online, where orders will be fulfilled first-come, first-serve.

The team at Space Campers believes once they have the final dimensions from Tesla, they can have the first production units ready in four months. The $100 deposit is fully refundable.
