Author Notes

For years I’d toil over one of those thousand-ingredient, tea + booze + Champagne + over-complicated simple syrup + aromatics punch recipes every time I’d whip out my trusty punch bowl. But it recently dawned on me: Punch is just a giant bowl of co*cktail. Which means if I pick something I like that’s simple to make in a single serving, I can easily scale up and add a festive ice ring to make it bowl-worthy.

This year I landed on the Negroni Sbagliato, a fizzy, ever-so-slightly lighter version of my favorite gin co*cktail. While the original is 1:1:1 gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari, the Negroni Sbagliato—that means “mistaken” in Italian for all you linguists...apparently the birth of this delicious drink was an accident—keeps the ratios the same but swaps the gin for Prosecco or another bubbly.

Since everything is added in equal amounts, you don’t have to do any math at all come punch time. Just add one bottle each Prosecco, sweet vermouth, and Campari, and give everything a gentle stir. If you like a lighter drink, or want to stretch your punch longer throughout the evening, I suggest doubling up on the bubbly or topping off the bowl with plain seltzer; to be totally honest, I actually *prefer* the taste with double the bubbles.

And a quick note on that ice ring: You’re going to want to make more than one. (Two or three should suffice for refreshing your punch throughout the party.) If you’re a planner, start a week or so ahead and use your Bundt pan to make a new ice mold each night until you have the number you want. Don’t have that much time? Get creative with your molds so you can make them all at once—there’s no reason you have to use a Bundt. I’ve used everything from small mixing bowls to cake pans.

You can also get creative with what you’re adding to your ice mold: Any fruits, herbs, or whole spices are fair game. For this particular punch, I’m a fan of combining sliced orange rounds, whole fresh cranberries, rosemary sprigs, and star anise because it looks so colorful and festive. I layer them into the mold before adding the water, keeping in mind the cranberries will try their best to float to the top (sometimes I try to trap them in place with the oranges, but you do you). If you don’t have any of that stuff on hand or don’t feel like bothering, plain old ice works too! And one last tip: To get the clearest ice possible, use distilled water (it has less mineral content). Some people say to boil it twice first too (this helps minimize those cloudy air bubbles) but in my humble opinion, that’s a lot of effort for something nobody but me will notice. —Cory Baldwin

Negroni SbagliatoPunch

Ingredients
  • For the ice molds:
  • 2 oranges, sliced into thin rounds
  • 1 1/2 cupsfresh cranberries
  • 10-15 small rosemary sprigs
  • 9 whole star anise
  • For the punch:
  • 1-2 (750 ml) bottles Prosecco or other dry sparkling wine
  • 1 (750 ml) bottle Campari
  • 1 (750 ml) bottle sweet vermouth (I like Carpano Antica, but Martini Rosso will make your finished punch a more brilliant red color)
  • 1 bottle seltzer (optional)
Directions
  1. For the ice molds:
  2. Divide the fruit and spices among 3 molds, bowls, cake pans, or bundt pans. Fill with water (use distilled for slightly clearer ice), cover with plastic wrap or a plate, and freeze until solid. When you’re ready to use one, loosen with a little bit of hot water and then add to your punch-bowl, pretty side up (whatever that means to you!).
  1. For the punch:
  2. Combine all ingredients in your punch bowl. For a lighter punch, top off with more Prosecco or with seltzer. If you plan on refreshing your punch through the night, double the recipe and refresh with equal parts all ingredients in any amount you please throughout the night (I do half-bottles at a time).

More of an Americano than Negroni but still beautiful and I’m excited to bring it to our Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. Thank you for the recipe, I’m sure it’s going to be a keeper.

I don't understand why this was on the "hold the booze" list.

FAQs

What's the difference between a Negroni and a negroni sbagliato? ›

A classic negroni contains equal parts gin, vermouth, and Campari. While a sbagliato, which translates to “mistake” in Italian, swaps prosecco for gin. Supposedly, a bartender grabbed sparkling wine instead of the spirit as he was making a negroni, and the drink stuck.

A negroni is an Italian co*cktail made with gin, red vermouth and Campari. A negroni Sbagliato substitutes prosecco for gin. So it's a little less boozy, perfect for those occasions when you don't want to overdo it ... or for an embattled heir who's too busy for a hangover.

A negroni sbagliato is simply a negroni mixed with prosecco in place of the traditional gin, yet on Google Trends, which shows global search interest over time, there was a seismic spike on 5 October. The origins of the trend can be identified with unusual precision: a namecheck by actor Emma D'Arcy.

Is Negroni better with Aperol or Campari? ›

Aperol is less bitter than Campari and has a sweeter and fruitier flavor, meaning this co*cktail will have a subtle sweetness to it. Campari has noticeably bitter and herbal flavors by comparison. These notes are good to keep in mind when deciding which variation of a Negroni you prefer mixing.

What's the difference between Aperol Spritz and Negroni Sbagliato? ›

This is essentially a Negroni spritz. It's a relative of, and similar to, the Aperol Spritz, only a touch more bitter with a hint of earthiness that gives it more of the gravitas. It is a fantastic low-proof co*cktail and makes for an excellent aperitif.

What is a dirty Negroni? ›

Here is an uncommon one that I really enjoy: A Dirty Negroni. It doesn't contain any dry gin, vermouth, or Campari. But it tastes like it does. Instead, we use 2oz of Cynar, that delightful artichoke-based amaro, with 1oz of Old Tom-style gin. It sounds funky, but it works.

How strong is a Negroni Sbagliato? ›

While the original Negroni is what's known as a spirit-forward drink (booze on booze on booze) that Lyre's says comes in around 24% ABV, the sbagliato isn't such a heavy hitter. As per Primo Aperitivo, such a drink is more likely to be around 13% ABV even though it, too, contains no non-alcoholic mixers.

Why did Negroni Sbagliato go viral? ›

Earlier this month, D'Arcy appeared in a TikTok video with “Dragon” co-star Olivia Cooke, during which Cooke asked the 30-year-old actor what their drink of choice is. “A negroni sbagliato with prosecco in it,” said D'Arcy with a playful grin.

What's the difference between Americano and Negroni Sbagliato? ›

Despite its origin, the Sbagliato is more a variation on the beloved Americano than a Negroni in terms of drinking profile. The Americano (which predates the Negroni) omits the gin and adds a charge of soda to Campari and sweet vermouth. The result is a lighter, more refreshing drink.

What is the drink of choice for the Sbagliato? ›

The Negroni Sbagliato is a co*cktail with a bittersweet taste that is made up of Gin, Campari and Prosecco. Prosecco is what makes Negroni Sbagliato stand out from the origianal drink. It may seem like it's difficult to find the perfect Prosecco to use in this co*cktail but it's actually not.
