That is simply untrue. Green papaya is a staple vegetable across Southeast and South Asia, there is no evidence at all that it leads to miscarriages.

Richard

I like to make this to serve alongside larb. I have never seen green papaya in the market so I use chayote, which you can wash and shred. No peeling needed, even use the seed. But cabbage sounds good too.

Stacy

I used ripe papaya and this was still tasty, more chiles offset the sweet. A blend of jicama and ripe papaya would be nice here if you can’t find green papaya. Top with a little blend of scallions, mint, basil, and cilantro for that something extra.

Lindsay

easy the cups are full of air and shreds, the green papaya is as solid as a brick.I live in Thailand.I have 5 chillis in mine,My Thai wife has 10.I have this salad for lunch every day with 4 skewers of smokey BBQ'D chicken.

Lindsay

so if you read the link provided by Stilettosinthekitchen below it states "There have been no recorded cases of Green Papaya causing abortions in humans".

Chris

I have used spaghetti squash and find it a good substitute since I can’t get green papaya here.

RM

If you are pregnant, do NOT eat green papaya salad, it will cause a miscarriage.

Rosy

Any substitution for fish sauce?

Sharon de Cook

Any substitute for dried shrimp? Shellfish allergies here.

Jessie

Made this with leftover rambutans, and added mint and cilantro. Subbed cashews, and cut down on sugar by almost half. Zested two key limes before juicing them. Was great. Kids ate it, even if my super-taster picked out the fish sauce immediately. Also added fried onions on top.

I made this with peeled and shredded green mango and it turned out delicious. Couldn't find Thai chilis today so I used serrano chilis.

Casey

I use shredded carrots, topped with scallions and cilantro. I love this recipe

Jennie

I made this with one ripe papaya (it ripened before I got around to making the salad) and two ripe mangos and it is so delicious I cannot stop eating it.

Great recipe as written! Shredded carrots, all orange or mixed colors, work equally well with this recipe. I recall that in the late 70's Thai restaurants often used shredded carrots because obtaining green papaya was difficult.

I can't recommend this recipe enough. The versatility is pretty much unparalleled once you get the sauce down. The heat-free task of muddling the chilis, garlic, lime, sauces, and sugar is perfect for the warmer weather ahead and/or for when you have begun to fully resent your kitchen. You can make this salad as spicy or mild as you like and can truly use almost crunchy vegetables you like. Personally, I've found the addition of basil, grilled shrimp or tofu, and pineapple all to be wonderful.

Lisa

If you can’t find green papaya use shredded green cabbage- I call it Thai slaw and it’s delicious.

substitute of dried shrimp

Can you please give a substitute of dried shrimp. I am a vegetarian.

Great easy fresh salad. Recipe is a keeper.I used jicama instead of green papaya: worked perfect. The recipe seasoning is good but need more lime.I also added a dash of herbs ( basil, mint, cilantro) worked well.

Susan

Delish!!!
